StubHub was a major changer for the secondary ticket industry when it initially launched. While StubHub's fees were exorbitant, they were steady. Buyer fees were always 10%, while seller fees were almost always 15%, with rare exceptions for long-term sellers.

However, in the beginning of 2014, StubHub began to play with their fees. When StubHub switched to showing all-in pricing, they took advantage of the chance to experiment with charging customers ranging from 2% to 20% (in addition to the 15% charged to sellers).

Buyer costs on StubHub now vary depending on the event location, timing, performer/team, and who knows what else. The only way to find out what buyer fees StubHub charged was to offer a ticket for an event and then check at the price at which StubHub listed it. There was no transparency at all.

StubHub Seller Fees - How Much Does StubHub Charge?

Sellers can advertise their tickets for free, and unlike StubHub's buyer fees, sellers are almost always paid a 15% fee if their tickets sell. If you're a seller trying to lower your StubHub costs, your only true choice is to sell a large number of tickets. There are no discounts or coupon codes available to sellers to reduce the commission that StubHub collects on your transactions.

StubHub operates on the assumption that they are the only option for selling tickets online, and they take advantage of this. If you're a huge seller, your costs can be decreased to as low as 10% based on how much you sell, but to make a significant difference, you'll need to sell hundreds of thousands of dollars in tickets each year.

If you're just wanting to get rid of some spare tickets, this is probably not the place for you.

What StubHub Stated About Its Fees

It's a shame that StubHub's User Agreement doesn't go into further detail about its fees. This is all there is to say on the subject.

The MLB, which has collaborated with StubHub to profit from baseball tickets sold on StubHub's site, provides the most obvious answer on StubHub's fees:

According to my understanding, there are approximately 50 brokers that are merely charged 5% to 7.5%. These brokers are given preferential treatment because they were among the first to employ Ticket Technology, a POS that assisted brokers in managing their large number of ticket listings and selling tickets.

As part of the arrangement, when Stubhub purchased Ticket Technology, the original 48 brokers who used that POS received a reduced commission rate.

Is it permissible to resale tickets?

Ticket reselling is permitted in all 50 states. Many states prohibit reselling tickets at an event site. In some states, the amount that can be charged above the face value is limited. To sell tickets on StubHub, sellers must accept StubHub's user agreement and agree to follow local laws.

StubHub guarantees the following to buyers:

• Your tickets will be genuine and good for admission.
• You will receive tickets that are comparable to or better than the tickets you ordered, or your money will be refunded.

• A buyer or prospective buyer will never contact you personally.

• You can change your ticket prices at any time to match market value.

• StubHub will pay you (not the buyer) for every ticket sales you complete.
